This post has been a long time coming but I have finally managed to sit down and write it. As always the topics surrounding breastfeeding and formula feeding is the same, it hasn’t changed.
Just like last time, there is this pressure to breastfeed because yet again ‘Breast is Best’, but is it really!
From when Martha was born I had struggled to get her to latch properly and even when she did, it still did not feel right. In such a short space of time, it had gone from ‘ok I think I’ve got this’, to ‘ouch’ the pain was starting to get unbearable. When this happened I made sure I had some expressed milk ready to allow myself to heal a bit.
I lasted 2/3 weeks breastfeeding before deciding to move to formula, and you know what I am so glad I did. Martha was suffering from Breast Milk Jaundice and her levels were increasing with an overall result of 130 when the normal figure is no more than 20, but as soon as I stopped breastfeeding and turned to formula her levels dropped to 43 and she regained colour in her face.
The experience of breastfeeding this time around I feel Breast Was NOT Best at all, but rather it made my little girl look so ill. Instead, the formula has been the way to go for us and you know what, Martha is one happy little girl.
You can continue to breastfeed with breast milk jaundice but for my family, it was the right decision to move to formula.
