I don’t know about you but it has taken us a little longer than I thought it would in getting the girls into a bedtime routine. Not long ago we had episodes of Martha refusing to sleep, Mabel crying because she didn’t want to go to bed and when they were both in the same room they just mucked about or woke each other up.
We separated them so they each have their own rooms, and boy how things have changed. They do not wake each other up anymore which is nice, but they both now and again still wake in the night, with Martha wanting her dummy, and Mabel being scared of something. It is definitely an improvement because we are all getting at least some sleep whereas before sleep was a non-existent part of our lives.
My husband works in London and so his commute is long which leaves bedtime up to me during the week. I still can get frustrated or want to rip my hair out at times, but the majority of the week, bedtime goes with minimal fuss. Our routine seems to work well with our family so I thought I would share it with you.
5 pm – Dinner
This can be a little bit earlier depending on the times that the girls had their lunch and snack.
5:30/5:40 pm – Bathtime
With dinner time being a little bit messy it is nice to get the girls clean and fresh as soon as possible. After bath time is when I cover Mabel with more of her eczema cream and put the girls in their pyjamas.
Both girls have milk before bedtime which is when they start to wind down
6 pm – Martha’s Bedtime
We put Martha down first to allow for one on one time with Mabel. I check her nappy, brush her teeth, give her a kiss and a cuddle then put her dummy in her mouth to settle her down.
6:30 pm – Mabel’s Bedtime
I check Mabel’s nappy, brush her teeth, she has her inhaler, more eczema cream, then it is onto storytime. Mabel picks the book she want’s me to read which is always the same ‘The Ticklemonster’ and then I give her a kiss and a cuddle. She usually continues to read a book to her toys or plays with her paw patrollers in bed which makes her tired. We allow this because she is not disturbing anyone and within 30 minutes she has settled herself down.
7 pm – Both girls in bed.
This is when I can relax and cook dinner for when hubby gets home.
(We will be putting the girls back into the same room in the future to see how they get on, so fingers crossed it continues.)
