As a mother of 2, I have often thought about what advice I would give to my first-time mum self. Now I can’t go back in time but I can write all those points out as a bit of fun and hopefully, it will show how far I have come.
Dear my first-time mummy self,
*People will have lots of advice, whether you have asked for it or not. Take it with a pinch of salt as you know what is best for your baby.
*No 2 labours are the same. Yes, you may have a traumatic first delivery, which you were right to think (maybe you are Psychic), but you got through it and next time will be much smoother.
*You Are Not A Rubbish Mother. You will say this to the nurse, midwife, family and yourself, but remember that you need time to heal, so indulge in a little ‘me’ time because the baby is fine getting lots of daddy cuddles. And trust me you will heal in no time.
*Breastfeeding or Formula Feeding. Don’t get hung up on which is better because feeding your baby is what is important, no matter which one it is.
*Don’t buy all these different creams, moisturisers and oils because you don’t actually need them and in years, well in months to come, after baby number 2, you will still have unopened bottles. You only need a couple of things, Nappy Cream for soothing a rash and Vicks Baby Rub which will help make your baby calm and relaxed with mild fragrances of Aloe Vera, Rosemary and Lavender. Together it makes for a peaceful night.
*Don’t try and be a ‘perfect’ parent as you will quickly realise there is just no such thing. We all make mistakes, so learn from them and move on.
*Try and get out of the house and meet new people as much as possible. By doing this means you won’t feel isolated and you will be creating lots of memories together.
*If things do get too much, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
*It does get easier. Before you know it you will have a routine and will even get your sleep back.
*When you see those 2 lines again and the word ‘pregnant’ within the first 9 months, just take a minute, breathe, because your life is going to change again, with even more love, cuddles and memories.
*You are going to embark on an amazing adventure and feel love you could only ever dream of, make sure to enjoy every single moment because they do grow up quickly.
And remember you are doing an amazing job.
