A couple of weeks ago we went on our first family holiday abroad to Spain and it was such a wonderful, relaxing time. Before booking, I had done some research to make sure I chose the right destination. The top place to take young children was Tenerife, but with an over 4-hour flight, I thought that might be too much for a first attempt. The second place on the list was Benalmadena in the Costa Del Sol and it seemed to tick so many boxes, plus it was only a couple of hours plane ride away.
We booked the holiday during Term Time as the girls are not at ‘Big School’ yet which really helped keep costs down. The hotel we stayed at was The Hotel Spa Benalmadena Palace and I paid extra for a side sea view room, which turned out to be money well spent, because the view of the sea, marina and mountains were amazing. The self-catering room had everything we needed but my only niggle is that a couple of things were broken, a fresh lick of paint was needed and just an overall deep clean would have been better.
The timing of taking the girls during the off-peak season meant that it wasn’t too busy and made the family time more enjoyable. The girls really got involved in the kids club and each night was spent dancing and playing games at the Mini Disco. We even managed to walk to the Marina on one of the days for Ice Cream and it was the best I have tasted.
Of course, no holiday is without its cocktails and I made sure to try quite a few as well as partaking in the ‘happy hour’ of Buy One Get One Free on drinks such as Sangria. That was the thing about the hotel we stayed at, happy hour was on at different times at different bars, so you could really spend a lot less than you initially thought.
Overall I had the best time making lots of memories with the sun shining, tapas and ice cream that it feels a bit sad to be home. I now cannot wait to start planning another getaway with the girls and explore more destinations, but hope at some point to make a return to Benalmadena.
