Tips For Decluttering Your Home

We’ve all had that moment where we’ve stumbled upon something in our home that’s totally useless, and we’ve not bothered to chuck it out or sell it. What’s worse is that it’s taking up valuable space in your home and making it seem more cluttered. A messy space isn’t going to bode well for your mental health or for the appeal of your home. So here are some tips for decluttering your home.

Make A List

The first thing to do is to make a list. Write down all the spaces in your home that you would like to change and what you need to do in order to achieve it. Maybe you would like to get rid of enough clutter to make room for a new piece of furniture or possibly your dressing table needs a clear out of old makeup. Having a list will help you remember all these goals so that you can tick them off one by one.

Go Room By Room

Rather than moving all over the place, go into each room individually so you can focus on one space at a time. In each room, it will vary how much clutter there is with the bedrooms and spare rooms normally being worse for hoarding stuff. Take a deep breath before going into each room, spend a minute or two surveying the room and take it section by section. If you start to feel overwhelmed, step out for a quick break and make yourself a cup of coffee or go for a walk. It’s good to just take a moment to relax as a messy space can tend to be quite a stressful environment to be in.

Be Ruthless With Sentimental Items

Sentimental items are going to be the most difficult to get rid of. Some items are obviously hugely important to you, but the line between what’s sentimental and what’s actually rubbish can sometimes get blurred. A standard train ticket or birthday card from years ago is not really going to have much significance now, and it’s only taking up more space for the things that you can get some real enjoyment from. Take a look at each of your sentimental items and ask yourself whether you can go without it.

Challenge Yourself To Fill Up The Rubbish Bags

To give yourself a challenge when decluttering, have a number that you want to reach in terms of filling up rubbish bags. It will help you be more ruthless when it comes to throwing out things you don’t need or require anymore. If it’s a large project you are doing then you might need cheaper bin hire. There’s also something very cleansing seeing so many trash bags being thrown out. Do the challenge with other members of your household if you live with others. It can be a fun task to do if you’re competing against each other. Perhaps the one who loses has to buy the winner a drink or dinner.

Decluttering your home is essential and should be done every so often to keep on top of the mess. After all, we tend to bring in a lot of clutter over the course of a few months.
