I recently read many articles about soft play and the love it or hate it debate. It was upon reading someone’s comment that I realised I have it very lucky at soft play which is why I enjoy bringing the girls here. You see they had written that everyone seems to have this vision of letting the children play and burn off energy while you can relax and have a quiet cup of coffee. You see for me that is exactly what happens in reality.
Mabel and Martha love soft play and it is a place where they can have fun, have independence, interact with other children and be active. They head off on their own while I sit down to a cup of coffee, maybe a cheeky cake, and I can have some alone time. It is the best thing ever. In order to use my time wisely though I now bring my laptop down, log on to the wifi and try to do some admin. It is what I am doing now while typing this blog post up.
Of course, I keep my eye on them and I can hear them all the time laughing and having fun. They also do appear at times but to either get some water or for food. 90% of the time it is always food, but it is so lovely to be able to give them that independence in a relatively safe environment.
I do have to say it was not always like this. There were times when Mabel was 3 and could get herself around the large equipment, but Martha could only stay in the little toddler section. I would constantly be on the go and did not have the time to go to the toilet, let alone get myself a cup of coffee. The thing I did enjoy was that as an Adult the kid in you comes out as you hurtle yourself down a large blue slide, or throw yourself over some soft obstacles.
So while there is still a love it/hate it divide, I have been in both and for me have found it got easier as the girls got older. Going to a soft play is great for the girls and it is also great for me because I get out of the house and can watch Mabel and Martha as they grow up before my eyes.
What do you think about soft play? Love It or Hate It?
